Baby Steps Towards Better Nutrition

January 8

So now we can slow down a little bit and focus once again on our bodies and taking care of ourselves. January is the month for starting over with what is really important to us. I think people sometimes make the mistake of choosing a resolution that is too big or unrealistic. Let’s not set ourselves up for failure once again. Let’s set some realistic goals and take baby steps towards better health.

I have an idea for you. Try adding different foods or spices to your kitchen that you know are good for you but for some reason, you just don’t include them in meals. For example, kale is a superior green food that is loaded with calcium, antioxidants, phytochemicals and vitamin A. Another addition could be dried beans which are rich in calcium, protein, fiber, thiamine, pyridoxime, iron and potassium. Remember to soak those babies overnight before cooking them. Finally, how about trying some turmeric for seasoning? Turmeric is native to India and in the same family as ginger. It is known for having anti-inflammatory properties. I’ve actually had two massage therapists recommend adding this to my diet for relief of arthritis pain. It contains circumin (a group of antioxidant compounds) and is considered to be antimutagenic (possibly helping to prevent cancer).

This weekend, I got out my crockpot. It doesn’t get any easier than that. In it I put: purple kale, white beans, turmeric, sliced garlic cloves, carrots, Earth & Sea Salts Thai Chili Blend and some goose meat that a friend gave me. If you don’t have goose meat :-), you could use chicken, bacon or ham. Skip the salt if using bacon or ham. What’s better for dinner on a cold January night than a bowl of hot soup?

In case you’re wondering, my New Year’s resolution is to be more kind, not only to other people, but most importantly to myself. This includes making healthier choices, physically and emotionally. So far, I have found this to be a very simple thing to do but very powerful. Seemingly small thoughts and gestures never go unappreciated and always come back to you. This year, I hope we can all treat each other better, especially ourselves.
